From One Phone Call to a Full New Smile: How Greyholme Dental Supports Every Kind of Patient

Bishops Cleeve dentist

Not every dental journey starts with a routine check-up. Some begin with a call from someone who has not seen a dentist in years, or a quiet enquiry about finally doing something for themselves, or an emergency that cannot wait. At Greyholme Dental in Bishops Cleeve, receptionist Emma has been the first point of contact for all of those patients for almost eight years. She spoke to us about how the practice handles those conversations, what makes the experience at Greyholme different, and the patient story she will not forget in a hurry.

The Conversation Behind Every Cosmetic Enquiry

Patients who call about treatments like clear aligners or veneers are rarely just asking about a procedure. There is usually something more personal behind the enquiry, and Emma’s approach is to find out what that actually is.

“When people phone up with those kinds of enquiries, it’s normally because they feel self-conscious about their appearance, or they’ve got an event coming up that they would like to have treatment for. So what I tend to do is just sort of have more of an informal chat, and just see what their needs are, what their desires are, what the goal is, what they’re looking for in the end game.”

Sometimes the goal is practical: a wedding, a holiday, a big occasion on the horizon. But often the motivation runs a little deeper than that.

“Sometimes we care so much about other people that we often forget to take care of ourselves. So sometimes there’s just that part of you that’s just like, you know what, I’m going to do this for myself, for once.”

Emma takes those calls seriously, because she understands that for many patients, picking up the phone at all was the hardest part.

When It Is an Emergency

Dental emergencies are stressful by nature. A patient ringing in pain, or with a problem that has become impossible to ignore, needs to feel heard immediately. That is exactly where Emma starts.

“Anyone who wants to phone in for an emergency, again, we are always here to help. Just ask them to describe what the problem is, sympathise with them, make sure that they feel heard and understood.”

Many of those calls also carry an undercurrent of embarrassment, often from patients who know they have left things too long and feel guilty about it. Emma recognises that pattern, and addresses it directly.

“Sometimes in these cases it’s often, again, going back to the dental nervous anxiety side of things, that they haven’t been for a while. So just to alleviate their fears and sort of settle them into just an informal conversation, so that way we can discuss what their needs are and how best we can help them with their problem.”

The Patient Story She Still Thinks About

Over the years, Emma has watched many patients go through treatments that change not just their appearance, but their entire relationship with dental care. One stands out above the rest.

“We had a patient who was very, very nervous when he came in. He was absolutely petrified of the dentist, and he phoned up and said, look, I need to get things sorted, I’m absolutely petrified, but I know that I need to get things done now because it’s gone past the point of no return, so can you help me? We got him booked in, we gave him pretty much a full new smile, and by the end of it he was absolutely thrilled, and he comes to us now as a regular patient, because he no longer has a fear of the dentist.”

It is that shift, from someone who dreads the dentist to someone who attends without a second thought, that Emma finds most rewarding about her work.

“Honestly, one of the most satisfying parts of the job is turning a nervous patient into a regular attender.”

What Sets Greyholme Apart

Ask Emma what makes Greyholme Dental worth choosing over other practices in the area, and she gives a clear, practical answer. Reputation matters, and Greyholme has built one.

“We have very good Google reviews. We have over 100 Google reviews, which is quite a decent amount, all from our lovely patients.”

Accessibility is another factor that Emma believes genuinely makes a difference to people’s lives. Not everyone can step away from work for a daytime appointment.

“We offer late evening appointments as well, too, so that does help us stand out a bit. We’re not the normal nine-to-five kind of stint. We do have late evenings on Mondays and Tuesdays, so people who have worked nine to five can then actually see a dentist after work, because we know how hard it is to try and squeeze that in in day-to-day life.”

And underpinning everything, she says, is the team itself.

“Small team, as well, that we all get on so well. Warren’s obviously fantastic at what he does, and our hygiene team is A class.”
